Integrated Optics

The term integrated optics refers to the combination of various optical components such as lasers, detectors, modulators and switches on a common substrate and the linking of these components by thin film optical waveguides. This technology is widely used in the field of optical communications and it is becoming increasingly important for optical sensors. There are several material systems that are commonly used for integrated optics, including glasses, lithium niobate and III-V semiconductors, which have all been employed within our group’s research. In our recent work, however, the emphasis has been on silicon-based integrated optics. The increasing interest in silicon as a materials platform for photonics is motivated in part by the prospect of using the fabrication infrastructure that currently exists for conventional microelectronics to drive down the cost of photonic devices. It is also being driven by the need to introduce optical communications at the chip level, if the computing power of microprocessors is to continue its Moore’s law growth beyond 2010.

Fiber-Optic and Integrated Optical Sensors

We have developed a strain sensor for robotics applications that is based on the measurement of strain induced changes in the polarization of a lightwave propagating through a fiber. We have also demonstrated a temperature-insensitive integrated optical strain sensor that is based on strain induced changes in the optical path lengths within a Mach-Zehnder interferometer fabricated in silicon-on-insulator.
