Engineering Physics is an interdisciplinary field of study where physics concepts are applied to several areas of application with major real-life impact including Nuclear Engineering, Electronic Devices, and Optical Systems.
Students in Engineering Physics (4-year program) have the option to enrol in the Co-op Program (5-year program), or Engineering Physics and Management (5-year program). Students enrolling in the Co-op Program will get hands-on experience by working in industry. For more information on the Co-op Program visit Engineering Co-op and Career Services. The Engineering Physics and Management Program integrates the technical education of the engineer with a business education for management. To learn more, check out Engineering and Management.
Students entering Engineering Physics in year two will take a number of fundamental courses with a focus on physics and math. These courses include:
- Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Computational Methods for Engineering Physics
- Analog and Digital Circuits
- Thermal Systems Design
- Applied Mechanics
- Acquisition and Analysis of Experiential Information
In years three and four, Engineering Physics students will take more specialized courses and will specialize in one of the following four areas of study:
- Nano- and Micro-device Engineering;
- Nuclear Engineering and Energy Systems
- Photonics Engineering
- Interdisciplinary Engineering (which combines aspects of the previous three streams)
Experiential and Real-Life Learning
Does your child ever feel like they could better learn and understand abstract concepts by experiencing them first hand and reflecting on their experience?
We believe learning from direct experience is an effective learning method that complements conventional lecture-based methods. For this purpose, we have incorporated experiential learning projects in every level of our curriculum. In addition to giving students a better understanding of theoretical concepts, these projects are designed to have a focus on real-life problem solving, making them rewarding and enjoyable.

McMaster Engineering offers a common first year (ENG 1) for all Engineering students. During ENG 1, students will take courses from all Engineering disciplines to become familiar with the engineering profession and to build a strong foundation for the more specialized courses and projects of the upcoming years. Admission requirements for ENG 1 can be found here.
At the end of first year, the students will select their engineering degree program. Admission into Engineering Physics is possible after the completion of the ENG 1 common year and filling out the second year placement form. The Department of Engineering Physics will organize a program information session for first year students in term II, which will be announced in classes and on our social media pages in February of each year.
Scholarships, Co-ops, and Internships
The Department of Engineering Physics awards paid NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards (NSERC USRA), to selected Engineering Physics students who will spend the summer working and researching in Engineering Physics research labs. Details are emailed to undergraduate students as information becomes available.

Engineering physics is a highly customizable program of study wherein students can chose their courses and co-op placements to prepare for careers in the following fields:
- Micro and Nanotechnology
- Applied Optics and Photonics
- Nuclear Engineering
- Energy Systems
- Medical Imaging
- Medical Physics
- Business and commerce
- Automation and Mechatronics
In addition, about half of our students continue to graduate school and enroll in a wide range of programs including: Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, and Medicine.
